Veteran member of talented foil unit who combined in 2000 with a pair of NCAA qualifiers-sophomores Ozren Debic and Forest Walton-to give Irish significant depth at the weapon ... his strong junior season could have yielded a spot in the 2001 NCAAs, but the region's four bids are limited to two fencers per school (Debic and Walton advanced to the NCAAs, with Mautone staying home despite being the region's No. 4 seed) ... a tall (6-1) and fast fencer who can pose problems due to unorthodox style ... tied for 45th on Notre Dame all-time victories list (109-44, .712), 17 shy of cracking the Irish top 10 for career men's foil wins ... has matured into an effective fencer, with improving discipline and tactical skills ... another in the long list of Notre Dame fencers who have hailed from New Jersey (including eight current members of the Irish program) ... placed seventh at the Penn State Open in the fall of 2000 (12th in the fall of 2001).
AS A JUNIOR: Compiled 30-13 regular-season record that included a 2-7 showing at NYU Open (28-6 the rest of the way) ... posted 2-1 record vs. then-No. 2 St. John's at NYU ... won all six bouts at Northwestern Open, went 13-1 at Notre Dame Open and closed 9-5 at Duke Open ... won all three bouts at Midwest Fencing Conference Championships before placing fifth in individual competition ... headed to Midwest Regional Championship as region's No. 4 seed before matching Debic with 10-2 record at qualifier (Debic won the fence-off, 5-1).
AS A FRESHMAN & SOPHOMORE: His 34-14 record in 2000 included 13-0 mark to help sweep six teams at Chicago Open, seven wins as Irish topped four teams at Detroit Open, a ninth-place finish at the MFC Championships and a fourth-place showing at the Midwest Regional Championships (8-3, with Debic first, Walton third) ... earned role among starting three in '99, when he led men's foil squad with 45 wins (seventh-most in Irish men's foil history) ... finished sixth at '99 Midwest Regionals.
PREP & PERSONAL: Won state title and earned all-state three times at Millburn High School ... his fencing coaches have included Tom Boutsikaris, father of Notre Dame junior women's foilist Liza Boutsikaris ... born Dec. 16, 1979, in Orange, N.J. ... enrolled in Mendoza College of Business as a management information systems major.
